The pressure to always be perfect, to perform and produce outcomes, was overwhelming. Facing the expectations of others who hope for my failure, so they can claim what I've worked so hard to build, added to this burden. The demand to always say the politically correct thing, the fear that any mistake could be irredeemable because forgiveness or a second chance might not be offered, weighed heavily on me.The constant need to guard myself was a reality I could not escape from. However, I no longer allow these pressures to define me or set expectations for my life. I now live a life of abundance, to THRIVE, free from the obligation to anyone.~Kamika Lynette Bell

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and it presents an opportune moment to explore a topic close to my heart: resilience in leadership. Leading is far from a leisurely walk in the park; it is a challenging and often noble role marked by prestige, power, and influence but also fraught with intense pressures. Leadership demands a robust set of skills, including vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, creativity, communication, and, notably, resilience.

The journey of a leader involves navigating through turbulent times—characterized by highs and lows and pressures from both internal and external sources. The position can be isolating, leading to difficulties in trusting others due to past betrayals and disappointments. According to a survey by the American Institute of Stress, an overwhelming 94% of leaders report experiencing work-related stress, with half of them acknowledging the need for help in managing it. The role can become particularly daunting when striving to meet everyone's needs, potentially leading to burnout if not managed with care.Despite these challenges, leaders who root their journey in a strong relationship with God and maintain supportive networks often develop a profound resilience. This resilience allows them not to be defined by their situations or outcomes. Many of us have felt the burden of others' expectations to achieve specific goals or have felt weighed down by the responsibilities others place upon us. Personally, I have navigated this landscape, and though I am proud of my successes, I take greater pride in having learned to stand up for myself and speak my truth.
These experiences taught me the importance of self-respect, self-love, recognizing my worth, and the extraordinary value I bring. Setting boundaries and communicating assertively have been crucial. The pressure to always appear perfect, to consistently perform and produce outcomes, was indeed overwhelming. I faced expectations from those who, rather than wishing me success, hoped to see me fail and take over what I had worked so hard to build. The requirement to always say the politically correct thing, coupled with the fear that any mistake could be irredeemable because forgiveness or a second chance might not be forthcoming, added significantly to this burden.
Nevertheless, I have chosen not to let these pressures define or dictate the expectations for my life. I now embrace a life of abundance and thrive free from the obligations to anyone but myself. This journey of resilience wasn't just about hard work; it involved being proactive, dreaming big, setting goals, learning from failures, mastering my gifts through both personal and professional development, and maintaining an impeccable work ethic. With success came enormous pressure, mostly from those who imposed their own unrealistic expectations, anticipating my failure for their personal agendas, misguided beliefs, or envy.

Tips for Cultivating Resilience and Thriving as a Leader
1.    Incorporating Prayer: Prayer serves as a foundational cornerstone for leaders, providing a pathway to grace, synergy, forgiveness, and resilience. These elements are crucial for thriving during challenging times, ensuring leaders maintain a strong spiritual and emotional base.
2.    Examine Your Strengths, Weaknesses, and Triggers: Focus on amplifying the positive aspects of your leadership—the strengths and achievements that define your success. While it's important to acknowledge your weaknesses, do not dwell excessively on them. Instead, view these areas as opportunities for personal and professional growth. Understand what triggers your stress responses and manage them proactively to maintain your well-being.
3.    Surround Yourself with Supportive People: It is vital to cultivate a circle of individuals who genuinely wish the best for you. These relationships will provide encouragement, honest feedback, and the necessary support to help you navigate through difficult times. Ensure that your inner circle consists of trustworthy and uplifting individuals.
4.    The Power of Disengagement: Learning to strategically disengage can significantly enhance your focus and clarity. Take time to disconnect from the daily hustle and the cacophony of the world to reflect on your personal and professional goals. This practice helps you to reconnect with your deeper purpose and the divine guidance in your life. It's also a protective measure to create a safe space away from distractions and unnecessary noise, allowing you to tap into your inner self more effectively.
While engaging with your support system, it's important to share your journey with those who have truly earned the right to hear your story. This selective sharing is not about isolation but about protecting your energy and focusing on those relationships that are truly reciprocal and supportive.
Building resilience as a leader isn't just about bouncing back from challenges; it's about thriving through them with grace and strength. By incorporating these practices into your leadership strategy, you create a robust framework that supports sustained success and personal fulfillment. Whether it's through prayer, focusing on strengths, surrounding yourself with the right people, or learning the art of disengagement, each step is a building block toward a resilient and thriving leadership journey.
